Face 2 Face is a network of trained parent volunteers who support other parents of children with special needs at the time of diagnosis or during challenging times related to their child’s disability. Every Face 2 Face befriender is someone whose own child has special needs.  They know what it is like to cope with a new diagnosis and the challenges that come with it in the future.  Face 2 Face is free and confidential.  We support parents of children with any type of disability or special need.

Face 2 Face links parents with befrienders who live locally so that they can meet and talk face to face. The parent and befrienders decide how often to meet and over what period.  Sometimes one visit is enough, other times a befriender may support parents over several months. Every befriender receives training and on-going support to make sure they are comfortable in their important role.

Discovering that your child has a special need or disability can be a devastating experience, talking to another parent who understands, can make all the difference. It is easy to feel isolated, shocked or even guilty. That is where Face 2 Face can help.

Each scheme is run by a co-ordinator who has worked in the field of disability and has close links to professionals and other relevant organisations who work in the area.

Shana joined the scheme on the 1st October 2013 and has written a few words to introduce herself;

"Hello, I’m Shana Weare and have recently started my new role as the coordinator for the Face2Face scheme across Telford &Wrekin and Shropshire.

I have two sons, my youngest being 15 years old who was diagnosed with autism when he was 2. I am a proactive mum and a parent governor at the special needs school that my son attends.

Previously I have worked as a teaching assistant supporting children with a range of special needs and disabilities, in a learning support unit within a mainstream setting and also in special needs schools.

I’m very excited about joining the Shropshire Face2Face team and building a network of befrienders to provide this new service to parents and families in Telford and Wrekin".

How to Become a Befriender
As a parent of a child with a special need or disability you have something unique to offer.  Your own experiences mean that you can empathise with other parents and help them to make positive adjustments to the news of their child's special need/disability or you can provide support when they are facing new challenges.

Many parents find it invaluable to have another parent to talk to who can understand and listen.

Why not become a Face 2 Face befriender and support local parents?  To become a befriender, at least two years must have passed since you learned of your own child's special needs.

As a volunteer befriender you will receive all the training you need to be comfortable in your role.  You will also become part of a regular support group and the scheme co-ordinator is always on hand to provide support.  All Face 2 Face schemes meet quality standards set by the Face 2 Face Network, supported by Scope, a national disability charity.  More information about the Face 2 Face Network and background to the scheme can be found at www.face2facenetwork.org.uk.
